Factors That Contribute to Drug Addiction

Factors That Contribute to Drug Addiction - addiction words - great oaks recovery centerWe have been fighting the war on drugs for more than 30 years. We’ve seen lives destroyed and lost because of drug addiction. Thankfully, scientific research on addiction continues to help us learn more about the disease and its treatment.

No one factor contributes to drug addiction. If that were the case, it would be easy to identify and easier to treat. Of the many factors that contribute to drug addiction, one is genetics. Genetics make up 50% of the risk for drug dependence; however, not all who have the genetic predisposition will become addicted to drugs. Studies show that family history contributes to addiction as well, with children who grow up in difficult homes having a higher potential for substance abuse later in life.

The environment in which one lives is also one of the many factors that contribute to drug addiction. For instance, people who live with intense emotional or physical stress from poor finances, bad relationships, stressful jobs, etc., will be more likely to turn to substances for relief.

Within the environment, peer pressure and types of friends can contribute to drug addiction. Kids are often influenced by what others are doing. If a child or teen has low grades and low self-esteem, the influence is even greater.

Lastly, the age at which one begins to use can influence addiction. Research shows that the earlier a person begins to use drugs, the more likely he or she is to develop serious problems.

There are other factors that contribute to drug addiction such as mental health, taking addictive prescription medication, and method of drug administration.
