Recovery Can Be A Gift

recovery can be a gift - hand holding heart - great oaks recovery Recovery is a gift that can be shared exponentially.

There is no cure for addiction, but recovery is possible. Let’s define those two words for a better understanding of what this means.  According to Dictionary.com, a “cure” is a means of healing or restoring to health; the word “recover” means to regain strength, composure, balance, or the like. So, in terms of addiction, a person can abstain from drinking and using drugs, and regain their strength, composure, and balance. They can go on to live joy-filled and productive lives.  They can realize that recovery can be a gift.

Whether you are personally struggling with chemical dependency, or someone you love is fighting the battle, the disease of addiction can feel like a curse.

Addiction drags down the person suffering from it as well as everyone around them. On the flip-side, once a person has entered recovery, many lives are affected in an equally positive way. Once an individual has found freedom from their addictions with the help of a recovery program or professional treatment, everyone can begin to heal.

The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous is a tool that helps many people find permanent recovery.

It has a passage that reads, “No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.”  By becoming part of a recovery community and sharing your experience, strength, and hope with others who are in desperate need of support, you can share that gift.

Recovery can be an opportunity to say to someone, “I understand. I’ve been there. This is what I did to get to where I am today.”
