About Crystal Clay
Crystal uses a person-centered approach to treatment. She adheres to a philosophy which endorses the idea that the counselor demonstrates unconditional positive regard for their client, exhibits empathetic understanding, and has genuine and authentic concern. She understands addiction is a disease, and her approach to intervention and recovery acknowledges the biopsychosocial aspect of addiction.
Crystal Clay has conducted many successful interventions in the Houston area, and this is due to her unique ability to structure interventions based on the individual needs and lifestyles of her clients.
She utilizes both direct and indirect intervention strategies to address substance abuse and addiction issues by focusing on the impact of addiction, maladaptive behaviors, and co-dependent relationships. When using the direct intervention approach, Crystal works with the family and friends of the addicted person to coordinate an in-person intervention in which she guides the family in a direct confrontation with the addicted person, which allows them to discuss how they have been personally impacted by their loved one’s addiction. This is done with the goal of helping the addicted person realize how his or her addiction has negatively affected those he or she cares about while highlighting their damaging patterns of behavior and need for treatment. The indirect intervention approach involves working intensely with the family, friends, and colleagues of the addicted person so that they may process the impact the addicted person has had on their lives and well-being. They work to develop skills that will improve their ability to effectively change the way they interact with the addicted person, end enabling/co-dependent behaviors, and encourage the addicted person to enter treatment.
Ongoing Treatment & Support
In her practice, Crystal provides ongoing treatment for those struggling with addiction by utilizing a comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment planning approach ranging from assessment/evaluation to discharge, referrals, and follow-up services with a focus on relapse prevention planning.
A combination of Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing is employed to allow the person struggling with addiction to identify personal issues contributing to substance abuse and develop skills that promote abstinence, personal accountability, and self development. Narrative Therapy allows the client to examine their lives up to this point, their identify, beliefs, and patterns of behavior that have contributed to their addiction. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is used to help the client address the faulty thinking patterns that contribute to substance abuse and addiction while Motivational Interviewing prompts the client to recognize which areas of their life require change and the skills needed to foster changes and achieve goals.
Crystal truly enjoys assisting those living with the effects of addiction on their journey to wellness.
