But where do you go?

Addiction treatment is completely different for everyone (because addiction is different for everyone). The following components of residential treatment are important to consider while searching for the best fit for you and your recovery:

Practical aspects:

  • Insurance coverage
  • Personal employment options for extended leave
  • Location
  • Length of stay

Treatment Available During Your Stay:

  • Detox programs
  • Rooming situation
  • Structure of a typical day
  • Individual and/or group therapy options
  • Medication management
  • Philosophy/Approach of facility
  • Recreational therapy (exercise, structured free time, etc.)
  • Education (family and individual)

Post-Treatment Plan:

  • Discharge planning
  • Education (family and individual)

Insurance

Practically speaking, you will first want to assess your insurance situation. Does your insurance cover some, most, or all of your stay? Most insurances offer coverage for treatment; how much is covered will depend on the policy. Don’t have insurance? Call the facility you are interested in to find out how to navigate this. Many facilities have admissions teams who will investigate your insurance coverage for you.

Have a support person help you figure out how to take any necessary personal employment leave as well. You will need to decide how long you plan to stay in treatment so you can clear your schedule for that time. This can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t all need to be figured out right away –– and it doesn’t have to just fall on you to figure it all out. Seek support as needed.

Ultimately, your recovery will change your entire life for the better. If you feel that finances or practical impediments may prevent you from healing, consider speaking to an addiction counselor or to those in your life whom you trust. There are always options.

What Do They Offer?

In terms of residential treatment offerings, there are many things to consider (as noted above). Clients must determine what is most important for their individual addiction recovery journey before choosing a facility. For example, a holistic, therapeutic approach is important to many clients. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 45 percent of people with addiction have a co-occurring mental health disorder. Therefore, proper medication management and effective counseling can be a significant component in a client’s recovery process. Additionally, it can be helpful to ensure that the mission, approach, or philosophy of the residential treatment facility aligns well with your particular needs and beliefs.

Discharge planning makes an enormous difference in recovery. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that 40-60 percent of people with substance use disorder relapse. Aftercare and sustainable, long-term emphasis on change, therefore, must be a priority to reduce the likelihood of relapse. A treatment facility’s emphasis on family/support system education and effective discharge planning is vitally important to consider.

You Can Do This

In truth, you have all the tools you need to recover on the inside. A strong residential treatment facility program will help you realize this and provide you with all the support you need to make sustainable change. You, your loved ones, and your community will be forever altered.
