The COVID-19 virus disrupted the rhythm of your life, but it does not have to derail your recovery progress. Your can still focus on your recovery during COVID-19. Whether you are beginning your recovery journey or have been navigating these roads for a while now, this new world of social distancing and travel restrictions affects us all.

What We Know

We know that excessive boredom and lack of stimulation are triggers for relapse. We can also expect that the social distancing guidelines may last for some time yet–and may come back into play in the future. Therefore, it’s more important than ever that we have as many tools as possible to support ourselves and our loved ones who may struggle most during these potentially isolating and lonely times.

Fortunately, people, programs, and businesses are getting creative about how to safely enjoy a variety of activities. From a wide variety of online self-improvement activities to creative pursuits–this is a great time to rediscover what resonates for you or a loved one the most!

“Making the Best” of Your Time

The following list of mind-expanding projects and just plain-old fun ideas may be able to re-spark a bit of joy in your life and help you appreciate this time for its gifts instead of focusing on its challenges.

  • Learn. Learning something new may help you remain positive and focused on your recovery journey. Many institutions are offering free online courses in subjects from literature to science, fine art to culinary skills, and many more–you may discover an expertise you never knew you had! In addition, many applications for phones and computers can help you learn a new language, discover digital art, or dive into something that holds your curiosity.
  • Puzzles. They’re not just for kids, and they come in way more types than you could imagine. From the classics like jigsaw puzzles, lego models, and mind-boggling crosswords to more modern-day choices like board games and video games, puzzles provide hours of entertainment and a beneficial workout for our brains. Research suggests that practicing jigsaw puzzles regularly may increase cognitive function in many more ways than one!
  • Vision Boards. Creating a vision board can be a great exercise for those in recovery by helping to reaffirm personal goals and aspirations. Vision boards act as a visual reminder of what matters most to us, dreams for our future self, and even characteristics we wish to embody. Display your finished piece somewhere you see daily to remind yourself of these goals!

Social distancing does not have to equate to isolation. There are many ways for us to stay connected and supported through all phases of the recovery process while adhering to social distancing guidelines. Be attuned to your own needs and the needs of your loved ones, and be present for each other as you adjust to a new schedule or adopt new activities into your routine. Remember to focus on your recovery during COVID-19.
