Tactical Recovery: Veteran and First Responder Program
Tactical Recovery: Proud to Serve Those Who Served
Great Oaks Recovery offers a specialty program designed specifically to help Veterans and First Responders who are struggling with addiction in the Houston area and throughout Texas. We recognize the long-lasting impact that these challenging roles can have on individuals and have created a tailored curriculum to meet their unique needs.
While stress, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and addiction rates have climbed for this population in recent years, many veterans and first responders don’t seek help because they aren’t confident their unique situations can be addressed in a civilian treatment center.
That’s why we partnered with PsychArmor, a non-profit that educates the civilian community on military culture. The result is that Great Oaks Recovery achieved certification as Veteran-Ready by the organization.
The Tactical Recovery program provides a culturally competent and trauma-informed environment, offering individualized care using evidence-based practices, proven to promote recovery among Veterans.
Great Oaks also incorporates Veteran and First Responder groups which occur twice weekly and led by a certified EMDR therapist. In addition, we offer clients the opportunity to participate in equine therapy, trauma-informed yoga, and other recreational therapies and groups.
Once a client completes treatment here, our alumni programs will connect them with ongoing, appropriate resources to help them continue in their recovery journey.
Great Oaks Recovery has been approved to accept VA Health benefits through the Community Care Network (CCN). The CCN allows veterans and the VA to utilize community partners outside the VA network as part of a benefit the veteran has earned.
What to Expect While in the Program
Residential treatment as part of the Tactical Recovery program at Great Oaks provides a safe, structured environment for Veterans and first responders who are struggling with a substance use disorder or mental health issue. Upon arrival, individuals are evaluated and if detoxification is necessary, it will take place before they move to residential care. Tactical Recovery clients at Great Oaks stay in the facility, with access to 24/7 care and support from a team of credentialed recovery professionals.
In the Tactical Recovery residential program, every day is structured to provide intensive intervention and to educate, encourage, and empower each resident’s movement into recovery. Each day is full and designed to optimize the time we have with our clients and set them up for success when they leave. Clients can expect some combination of the treatment modalities below:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR), somatic experiencing (SE), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), experiential approaches, and 12-Step work
- Individual, group, and family programming
- Psychiatric services, including medication management, if appropriate
- Substance use and co-occurring disorders education
- Daily process groups, mindfulness groups, and exercise and wellness activities
- Relapse prevention groups, gender groups, life skills groups, nursing groups, and discharge planning groups
With a focus on mind, body, and spirit, the Tactical Recovery program offers compassionate, quality care in an atmosphere conducive for growth. Residents may have access to nature walks, fishing, equine and animal-assisted therapies, exercise equipment, basketball, volleyball, and other recreational activities, as well as yoga, meditation, and other holistic therapies.
